In late 2015, Yamaha Thailand unveil an new 150cc machine that dubbed by Yamaha fans as Yamaha MT-15. Using MotoGP rider Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith from Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team as brand ambassador. This motorbike was first introduced at Thailand Motor Expo 2015. This Thai new naked M-Slaz based on Yamaha YZF-R15. The 150cc version of Yamaha sports bike YZF-R series.
A months later at Bali, Indonesia Yamaha Indonesia introduced this bike to Indonesian public at the end of January 2016. Valentino Rossi who invited by Yamaha Indonesia dubbed as brand ambassador for this 150cc bike. Too bad this bike does not having MT-15 name either. It was sold as Yamaha Xabre 150 in Indonesia. Whereas in a poll to determine the name of this motorcycle by a community, people prefer MT-15 name than Xabre.
So what is the relation between Yamaha MT-125 with Yamaha Yamaha M-Slaz or Xabre? if the you note it carefully, there are some similarities between the two. some similarities including both use inverted telescopic front suspension sized 41mm. At the rear end, both also use a monoshock suspension with aluminum swing arm banana models. Both also uses a twin spar frame called by Yamaha as Delta Box. Only in the sub-frame there is a difference as they both wear a different body.
The engine itself actually had same basic construction. The Motori Minarelli 125 LC engine witch is SOHC 4 valve single cylinder also used in Yamaha M-Slaz / Xabre. The main difference is M-Slaz and Xabre uses 150cc version witch has longer stroke than 125cc engine. This engine claimed has maximum power 12 KW at 8500Rpm and 14,3Nm at 7500Rpm torque. The 150cc machine is popular here due to better fuel economy than 200 or 250c and more power than 125cc machine. There also no 125cc law here in south east asia. Thats why 150cc motorbike are super popular with almost half million unit sold every year.
